ACP reveals interested in building port

Corozal

Although not yet approved the law to grant tax benefits to those who win the tender to build and operate the port of Corozal, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) released the list of the eleven companies that have expressed interest for participating in the prequalification stage and then determine which companies meet the minimum requirements to aspire to win the construction contract and management of the marine terminal.

In the statement released by the ACP, the amount of interest in the project is enhanced, which can be interpreted as’ the great demand for this service in the Panamanian Pacific coast, especially since the opening of the Canal expansion ‘.

The companies named by the Authority are: Terminal Investment Limited SA (Netherlands), Eurogate GmbH & Co. (Germany), Carrix, Inc. and Affiliates (Manzanillo) (USA), Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. (Korea), APM Terminals (Netherlands) Ports America (USA), CMA-CGM (France), Evergreen (Taiwan), China Shipping Ports Development Co., LTD & China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (ROC), Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (Germany) and Panama Ports Company.

The ACP emphasizes that ‘between operators who have shown interest are linked to several major customers of the Panama Canal, which essentially demonstrates commitment to the waterway and the desire to develop more port capacity in the Pacific sector isthmus’.

During a visit by executives of APM Terminals, a subsidiary of Maersk Panama, it was announced that the Dutch company was interested in managing the port.

Panama Ports Company, which manages the port of Balboa, also in the Pacific and one in Christopher (Atlantic) has opposed the construction of the terminal in Corozal, claiming that a third port in the area (in Howard, also in the Pacific Harbour PSA is currently in expansion) will create an oversupply. Panama Ports argues that it is better to build a logistics center and a terminal in Corozal.

‘The port of Corozal is a strategic decision for the country that will generate revenue for the concession, the movement of cargo and also bring added value to the route, attracting increased traffic of container ships through the Canal, therefore, higher income ‘, says the Authority in the statement.

Even when not published the tender for the project, various sectors reject the new port on the Pacific canal built in Corozal. Some, like the Canal pilots, say a terminal in that area will affect the transit of the expanded Canal.

Peace groups like Ascanio Villalaz Movement, argue that the area of Farfán / Palo Seco is best for the project.

In addition, there are sectors who believe that the port will not be granted tax benefits. In the National Assembly the draft Law to achieve fiscal equalization was rejected on first reading. The ruling party announced it will present the proposal again.

Before the publication of the list of stakeholders, and Jorge Luis Quijano Roberto Roy they had said that the rejection of tax incentives would be left would return to port construction, so it was imperative to pass the bill.
